To increase understanding of the Lower and Upper Octaves of Universal Emotions and their characteristic Energy Fields . This model of Emotions originates from David Hawkins MD PhD's Map of Consciousness and the Emotions
The Lower Octave of 8 emotions/moods/levels/energy fields... arise from a body centered perspective and physical sense of Being, personality and Identity..
In contrast the Ascending Levels of the 8 Upper Octave Emotions arise from identifying oneself essentially as a spiritual Being in a physical body.
Each of the 16 levels has its own distinct ecosystem of characteristic perspectives, motivations and behaviors.
Emotional mindfulness begins with the fundamental ability to recognize the Basic Contrast between Higher and Lower Octave feelings.
Feelings of Calmness, Kindness and Well Being characterise the Higher Octave. Feelings such as uneasiness, vulnerability and uncertainty underlie and characteize all the Lower Octave.Feelings
The guiding intent of the Higher Octave is to be of service to all.
By contrast the ego's Lower Octave core motivation is "me first" self interest
This powerful motivation is rooted in scarcity. Our ancient evolutionary story was a struggle to survive as a 2 legged animal in threatening physical environments. These basic instincts included satisfying hunger, seeking comfort and safe shelter, and reproducing. In ages of scarcity, hoarding, controlling and aggressively protecting scarce resources for oneself, family and tribe came first. Having a guarantee of abundance to share with others outside the circle of our family and community was the exception and not the norm.
Working steadily on revisions and updates to this site.
This program's vision is to foster a community of teachers and trainers committed to learning a practical program of emotional mindfulness. The mindfulness training is based on the Map of Consciousness and Emotions (aka MOC) by David Hawkins MD PhD. This Map (think of reliable GPS guidance) reveals the topography of the 16 Universal Emotions.
The program's first step is Awareness in recognizing each Octave's the pattern of Emotion within ourselves and our relationships.
The second step is Practicing how to spend ever more time in the Higher Octave od Emotions.
Emotions can be challenging to define and understand on the fluid ever-changing landscape of daily life. Feelings can suddently shift, and without an Inner Map to follow them, poor communication is likely. And from poor communication comes misunderstandings, conflict, discouragement and a sense of separation.
Surprisingly, Modern Psychology , after a century studying human behavior, still operates without consensus on a standard map/list of the fundamental emotions. Not to mention their overall hierarchy from the point of view of Consciousness.
Like the proverbial "elephan in the living room" (the elephant being the absence of a common, agreed upon emotional map) this blind spot sits there, waiting to be noticed. Yet too few health professionals recognize this glaring oversight. it. However as all drivers know... poor maps and blind spots leads to getting lost or accidents when communicating. .
As a result of a clear map, Academics, Professionals, Clinicians and Cognitive/behavioral scientists must select their own 'favorite' emoitonal model from the many competing lists of emotions out there. Google search to see for yourself.
.The Emotional maps chosen by Clinicians, Academics, and Research scientists vary widely in the clarity and expanse of the territory they cover.
In this morass of multiple different 'emotional landscapes' the Hawkins' Map of Emotions and Consciousness (MOC) imho, towers above them all.
This program strongly recommends the use of David Hawkin's book Letting Go* (his voice inflections and audiobook being my favorite format) to begin a study of the MOC. The beginning chapters, describing the 16 Universal Emotions, provides a good introduction.
An overview of the 16 Emotions are briefly summarized on this site
** A supplement on the Enneagram Personality model utilizing these 16 Emotions is also included on this site.
As mentioned, each the 16 Emotions Levels has its own
features, characteristics, perspective, and a certain mood and "feel" to it.
The 16 Levels/Emotions are arranged in ascending order from the lowest Level 1 shame energy calibration 20-30 to Level 16 Peace calibrating at 600+. Don't worry too much about not fully understanding calibrations right now, other than they reflects significant increases of energy and Power.
Each level also has its own "magnetic like" field. The "Likes"/ attractor fields and "Dislikes"/ resistance field. is different for each level and guides the motivation and direction of behavior in each field. For example, someone in Level 5 (100-125) fear emotional states, sees the world as a more threatening place, has more anxious thoughts, is risk avoidant, and behaves accordingly. At Level 9 (200-250) Courage, however, a person sees not so much a threatening but rather a challenging world . In this emotional ecosystem they have more energy and confidence with a "can do" attitude when facing uncertainty. As a result they are less constricted and have a more expanded set of choices.
The Upper Octave is characterized by such qualities as Wholeness Expansiveness a Harmonious Unifyingness Connectedness, and Power, The terms Self... Authentic Self... Spiritual Self are used in this Octave. Identity terms here arise from one's primary center of identity as a Spiritual and not physical self. From a Quantum versus Newtownian paradigm and perspective, ultimate Reality is the field Energy and Consciousness that contains within yet expands beyond the physical material realm perceived through the 5 senses.
The 8 Lower Octave emotions represent 8 descending levels of Consciousness and Energy from the highest emotion pride Level 175-199 and anger Level 150-175 down to guilt Level 30-50 and shame Level 20-30.
The Lower Octave is the emotions of the smaller self, mind, and desires. This Octave is characterized by emotional energies and qualities such as separatingness, polarizingness, constrictingness and the lower type of power Hawkins labels force. His classic book Power versus Force is dedicated to this subject.
The Lower Octave emotional fields are more turbulent and less harmonious in nature. The identity term here is of the ego personality. A self whose primary sense of Identity is centered in the body and it's individual aggregation of unique experiences, ideas, beliefs, cultural values and multiple desires.
Once again a reminder that each of the 16 levels of emotions has it's own ecosystem of thoughts, characteristic way of looking at the world, attractor fields and behaviors. Wow, that is a lot of stuff to to watch when practicing mindfulness.
Most everyone has experienced being within one or a combination of these 16 emotional states. This also includes even shifting between theTwo Octaves in minutes or even seconds. Yet despite the fluidity of combined and of feelings,
When it comes to defining a specific Level of Consciousness across living things, Hawkins refers to the the Emotional/Energy Level (calibrated from energetic ratings between 1-600).from which the rated subject operates most consistently. Bacteria and Trillobites for example rate from 1-19. Reptiles and crocodiles around 40! Again don't worry too much right now about this system of energetic calibrations. The MOC calibrations and the kinesiology process for determining them left me puzzled and skeptical when I first read about them. Kinesiology and muscle testing is a subject for another time.
Classic literature and many spiritual traditions describe the ongoing battle and tug of war between our Higher Self and our evolutionary heritage from the animal survival nature of us homo sapiens. On the emotional landscape, David Hawkins Map of the Emotions serves as a clear compass reflecting what is unfolding each moment as both sides battle for supremacy.
This Level of Consciousness contains the most Powerful energy state of the Higher Octave. It comprises a field of such Powerful Peace & Calmness that It is Unshakeable by any outer conditions.
Footnote: [Levels 600+-1000 for Hawkins represent the highest ranges of human experience described by saints and mystics as ineffable, that is, there is a sense of Awe at these Levels so profound that there are beyond being able to be put into words ..] For the majority of us, working to rise up through the 8 Levels of the Higher Octave will probably keep us plenty busy in this lifetime.
Hawkin's Energy calibration 600+
The energy fields of the 3 Higher Octave easily reflect their Unified and Holistic. nature.
Levels 14-16, Being in the Quantum realm, also have Holographic qualities. But please don't ask to explain how this happens. That's beyond my pay grade. Great books written on this.
At these high levels the Universal emotional energy fields of Peace Joy and Love easily blend and harmonize with each other. .
At Level 15 intense feelings of Joy Bliss & Ecstasy emerge.
Energetic levels 550-590 ish range
Unconditional
At this Level on practices to be kind to everyone and all living things at all times in all circumstances.
Warning: If one stay consistently in this energy field in all circumstances... they run the risk of moving up to Level 16 to join the community of enlightened saints and mystics :-)
There is a paradigm shift at this level from Level 13 the territory of cause and effect physical models of Newtownian science. to the jump to the Quantum Paradigm. Levels from 14-16. Again don't worry if this are fuzzy concepts.. Yet I need to include them here to reflect the sophistication of the Consciousness Model Hawkins outlines in more detail in his many books and seminars.
Level 14 contains powerul emotional energy of the Subjective experiences of Love and Compassion.
This Level is also the energy field of the mysterious Quantum Realm with mind its boggling phenomena such as the Observer effect, non-locality, superimposition, and Schrodinger's cat.
Energy Range 500-600
Level 13: The Higher Mind, the Intellect, the left brain thinkingness..., conceptualizingness... as the process to discern Truth from illusion and falsehood. .
One example of the expression of Higher Mind and Intellectual Understandingness is the impartial stance of a Scientist studying the physical/Newtonian world of solid matter. Emotional bias or subjective interpretations from the Lower Octaveemotions is banned when gathering experimental knowledge and expertise in an area of study.
Ultimately the most authoritative source of Truth lies beyond Level 13 at Levels 14-16.
More specifically these are the Most Powerful energy fields from the Subjective Experiences of Kindness Joy and Peacefulness coming out of the Heart.
These higher 3 realms of Consciousness lie beyond the range Level 13 confined to th empirical world. "Just the facts please please" says the dispassionate Western scientist.
But the really good stuff comes higher up in Levels 14-16
This is not a Feeling of passivity or retreating from challenging situations.. It is rather being emotionally "grounded" and not becoming upset when conditions do not go our way. When grounded, there is the power to not become reactive and to able to resist being pulled into any of the 8 emotions of the Lower Octave
Acceptance reflects a state of Non attachment to the magnetic pull (Level 6 desire)of ego's collection of Cravings or remaining balanced and non=reactive when unpleasant conditions i.e. Dislikes occur.
This practice is a cornerstone of Buddhist philosophy. This is a very Powerful energy field where compassion and patience can dissolve feelings of anger and judgement.
The perspective of this field is that harmful actions by others reflects actions triggered from a fear based ego defending its territory. And that when acting from the lower self, a person is not ableto see the self injurious nature of what they are doing in that moment . Range 350-400
To be led by something other than the the free will of the small self. The ego's bottom line is to always follow self interest over interest in others when a choice between the two must be made. .
In spiritual traditions the ultimate Guide is often given the name God or a Higher Power. A Presence that dwells in the Silence beneath all our thoughts. This Guide is often described as Omnipresent All Powerful Love.
This Guide however awaits patiently and humbly for a personal invitation to provide Guidanc. It does so as not to over rule our free will.
Range 350-400
A Powerful antidote to pride.
This Level is characterized by the practice of humbleness, being open minded, and being more neutrali rather than firmly positioned on either side of a polarizing conflict.
Understanding we never know everything about any situation or subject. helps a lot. And therefore it follows that making judgements feelings a sense of superiority or expertise expertise can be a slippery slope downward to mistakes and a need for correctionand and further learning. . Having a "beginner's Mind" as Zen would say helps stay in this energy field.
The ego based personality however, takes pride that it's opinions are superior by the very nature of being "My" opinion. The ego sees little need to recognizemuch less r surrender it's decision making authority to anything other than itself. The little self at Level 8 resists admitting nor taking responsibility for simply making human mistakes.
Range 250-300
Courage arises on this Level from the thought "I can do this"... The Power of courage allows us to stay with the experience of an overwhelming emotion... or to keep going forward steadfast into unfamiliar territory.
Pivotal at this Level is a beginning realization and ability to trust that Something greater than the little self/ ego is always there for protection and guidance.
Range 200-250
The energetic field where the source of happiness or suffering. is seen as coming from outer conditions including the behaviors of others. The ego mind targets outer circumstances for comparison and evaluation as to whether something is fair/unfair, true/falsea, likeable/unlikeable, accurate/inaccurate and a multitude of various value judgements...
Judgements involving unfairness become classic opportunities for the ego to feel entitled to victimhood status. Such ego judgements provide justification for attacking perpetrators with various include forms of punishment and loss of rights and freedoms.. Victimhood also relieves the ego of responsibility for choosing higher octave emotions. The ego quickly becomes defensive to protect itself if it's opinions or sole authority if questioned. Humility, and openmindedness are felt as threats to the ego/personality, rather than a path to the Higher Octave.
Threats in turn trigger the Energetic Power of Anger which is second only to the Power of Pride. The ego's survival defenses in the energy field of Anger includes avoidance of the lower and weaker energetic fields of fear, sadness, guilt and shame. Range 175-199
Feelings from mild frustration to extreme rage and hate if our judgements, likes and dislikes, or sense of ego security is challenged or threatened . Frustration can unleash the very Intimidating Force energy of Anger. Furthermore this angry energy is easily projected outward in the form of blaming others or outer circumstances for one;s angry behavior.. The classic excuse becomes,"it's not my fault, such and such made me act that way"
Conversely Real Power arises from an inward focus, deciding how to respond, and accepting responseablity for one's actions. The avoidance of responsibility is a subtle form of the victimhood stance. Yet it too sacrifices a mastery over circumstance that comed from exercising True Power Range 150-175
..
In the physical/material realm our body's biology is wired to move toward or be attracted to any object (person, thing, or idea) perceived as pleasurable and/or necessary for it's physical survival. Conversely, organisms spontaneously resist and move away from, anything experienced as painful, toxic, or threatening to its safety and health. Think of this this instinctive Force as a kind of magnetic Attraction & Repulsion that influence th eLower Octave emotions. The result becomes the lower ego mind reflexively labels emotions "good" or "bad" based on somatic experience feeling comfortable/pleasurable or uncomfortable/distressing.
Conversely from an the Upper Octave mental perspective , the Unshakeably Peaceful (UE#16) Authentic Mind simply witnesses all emotion as either Unifying and Connectinge (Upper Octave) or separating and dividing.. The Pride/ hubris (UE#8) reflected in ego mind's sense of solo authority is reflected in its constantly judging and evaluate the truth and reality of everything. This hubris can be dissolved by the Power of Unconditional Humility (UE#2). As Christian Buddhist and other wisdom traditions reveal, all 8 emotions of the lower Octave can form "blockages" that disrupt the flow of kindness through the heart Fortunately any of the Emotions of the Upper Octave can dissolve all Lower Octave emotions created by fearful defensive and self serving ego thinking.. The signature motivation of the ego is self protection and self interet. In contrast, the Motive of the Real and Authentic self is always service to all..Range 125-150
Fear of loss of control to keep the pleasure/comfort of our Likes. Conversely a fear of loss of control to avoid thepain/discomfort from any of our dislikes . Doubts undermining whatever the personality believes is its sources of security for its security Range 100-125
The greater the importance of the person belief or thing lost AND the sense of separation from that... the more intense the feeling of sadness and grief. Recurring states of grief can attract other Low Octave energy fields of Apathy/Depression, Guilt, Anger, and Fear that intermix with this feeling. The High Octave field of Acceptance emerges as space is allowed to bring awareness to all the feelings that can come with loss.Range 75-100
A level 3 there is little energy available. There is a lack of interest to engage in life. Declining energy might be from a series more minor losses and setbacks ..
Desires (Level 6) that previously provided vitality and motivation have declined. This is a place where one can feel worn down by hardships, and an inability to avoid pain and recurring sources of distress.
A sense of giving up and seeing a situation as increasingly hopeless is common. Being caught at this Level for a longer period of time is depressing. Typically outside help and intervention is needed to provide the additional energy to escape the downward pull and gravity of this ecosystem. Anti depressants, perhaps the most prescribed medication of all, is frequently very helpful here.
Range 50-75
Disapproved actions deserve Punishment which must be served before any offerings of corrective learning and encouragement can be offered to oneself or others.Range 30-50
A sense of diminished worth and inclusion that one can sometimes feels is deserved. Any hope or receiving forgiveness or redemption is in doubt.Range20-30
So many sources to humbly thank. Let's begin with David Hawkins' (MD PHD) amazing works and his Map of Consciousness (MOC) model describing the 16 emotional energy fields as one moves up from the Lower to Higher Octave.. . I echo his mantra of gratitude.(Gloria in Excelsis Deo) to that Higher Power by whatever name it is called. . I have tried to simplify and condense his MOC into into 2 Octaves of Feelings. Any flaws in these adaptations are mine alone and not a reflection ofrom his excellent MOC.
I was trained in the mission be of service to others during my 8 years of Jesuit education. The first 4 years were at St Ignatius High School in Cleveland Ohio followed (after graduating from Kenyon College) by another Jesuit institution, Loyola Iniversity of Chicago's Clinical Psychology doctoral program. Here I received my PhD.. and was surprisingly allowed to complete a theoretical and "data free" doctoral dissertationl on "The Origins of Meditation". This work outlined the need to go beyond the empirical constraints of the objective Newtonian paradigm to explore the direct experience of Consciousness via meditation.
While in graduate school I came across three pivotal influences. First and foremost was the book Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda and his teachings. In the following years in Chicago I began my study of Tai Chi and then the Enneagram. Exposure to the latter subject came via my new friend Deb who had just completed 3 years of intensive Enneagram training in the late 70's.
Yogananda is well known worldwide through his SRF organization found at yogananda.org . His deeply insightly commentary on the classic The Bhagavad Gita remains a deep source of inspiration. My self study of Taoism began by being a student at a nearby Tai Chi school. It deepened by teaching a Tai Chi course for a few years in Chicago at the Columbia School of Dance. Those classes remain as having been one of my most fun teaching experiences. Less fun at times but always extremely rewarding was in my role of a newbie student experiencing often painful ego reduction lessons from my personal Enneagram teacher and eventual wife, Deb. These days the tradition of that rigorous and humbling ego reduction training continues via my very patient and insightful three daughters and three sisters. Fortunately another threesome of very talented family members , 3 grandchildren ranging in age from from ages 12 to 19 are still cutting me some slack.
My Curiosity Sponge side for all things spiritual East and West, (from esoteric, psychological, scientific scriptural and ancient, sources) it is a challenge to choose the top influencers. Yet three stand out that continually reveal ever deeper layers of meaning , Living Untethered by Michael Singer, A Course in Miracles and from Yogananda and SRF The Lessons
LGAF?... What can I say... I love acronyms and puns. On a more serious note (pun intended) a Disclaimer needs to be understood by participants in any events of any kind associated with LGAF gatherings. First , such events are for educational purposes only and are not to be seen as any form or source of psychological advice, guidance, or substitute for persons seeking professional mental health services. And always call 911 or go to the nearest ER if you are experiencing any type of mental health crisis.
Also LGAF gatherings in any format ARE NOT CONFIDENTIAL Picture them like a live streaming class ...where any material shared by anyone is streamed and now available anywhere at anytime on the Internet for 100 years.
In sharing personal stories and experiences in LGAF events it is prudent to use generic identifiers and titles when referring to others in your life. For example categories such as "a family acquaintance" " casual acquaintance" "a friend" or "someone I have worked with" can cover a lot of territory. This make take some patience and creativity but such precautions serve a practical purpose of establishing a lack of specificity in the hopefully very rare possibility any misuse of personal disclosures. A sense of personal safety to share freely without fear ...keeps communication flowing.
** Elizabeth Wagele's The Enneagram Made Easy is my recommended introduction book to the 9 Types. I especially like how her book uses cartoons and humor to illustrate our Lower Octave's ego/personality's patterns of thinking, motivation, and behavior. The Upper Octave is the home of our Higher Mind and Authentic Self . The following very brief summaries integratie the vocabulary of the Octave levels (LU#s Lower Octave numbers 1-8 and UE#s Upper Octave numbers 9-16)are
used in these descriptions.
One had better become ever stronger to survive in this world of danger. That's how 8s think deep down. They develop enormous willpower and their fiery Anger can result in an intimidating presence. When faced with danger, they typically confront it when others are moving away from threats and conflict. 8s can view threats as challenges to become stronger. Similarly when seeing threats on the vulnerable and oppressed, 8s will confront bullies to defend the oppressed in the name of Justice.. 8s often struggle with tender feelings, since they perceive such emotions signal weakness to adversaries or even worse, erode their inner strength and resilience thus leaving them vulnerable in a harsh world.. To 8s, Lower Octave Emotion (LOE) #7 Anger is a power to be used.! LOE #8 ego Judgements view vengeance as justified toward bad actors preying on the vulnerable. As 8s awaken to their true self flowing from the Upper Octave:Emotion #14 Kindness emerges as the Greatest Power. #9 Trust in a higher system of justice* & order replaces vengeance. The Tao*, the Universal Karma* of corrective consequences and the natural laws of Nature* emerge to replace their role to personally uphold justice. #12 Acceptance of sometimes having to engage in Battle, as the last resort, becomes an act of courage and not vengeance. Innocence in having to battle and bodily injure a misguided brother who resist overtures of kindness and reason... is thereby still protected in such a warrior in battle.
The those around you can respond poorly when you express. your Likes and Dislikes growing up.. These feelings LE#6, can be met with Anger/criticism or indifference LE# 3 so self expression can be risky or painful. Over time the 9 ego not only numbs itself when it suppresses these understandable feelings of hurt and sadness, but can also fall asleep and avoid taking the risk of expressing one's own Likes & Dislikes LE#6. This pseudo comforting narcotization process can expand over time to cover most of a 9's emotional range. But being around adults who are frequently arguing and fighting adults is a very diffenent story. Unable to escape this approaching storm, 9s become quite sensitive to any early signs of approaching conflicts. They excel at reading people to and find ways to try to pro actively calm down the warring parties asap. They learn to not be vulnerable by expressing one's needs emotions Likes/needs or idea. Experience has taught them that these expressions may will be met with anger, criticism or indifference which are all painful. Risky to express your Likes. Better to suppress, Ignore, or numb as many as you can. 9s are practiced at ignoring all the LOEs They gradually ignore or fall asleep to their most of Likes. Those that remain that run the risk of expressing... are kept to a minimum . 9s know the addictive drowsy numbing narcotic comfort of our animal friend the sloth,.. They sink into the pseudo peace in being a "I'll do today's tasks later", couch potato. Upper Octave. for 9s UOE #!4 Loving kindness. 9s are some of the kindest people you will meet. As 9s awaken from their sleepwalking, a deep Kindness and an Unshakeable Peace arises as they realize who they truly are.
Ones learn early on about the power of the rules of the world made by persons with power and the culture around them. Obey these rules and you are judged good, and perhaps openly praised as a "good child". Perhaps more importantly, you avoid punishment. And that praise and acceptance helps us feel good and not bad about ourselves.. Disobey the rules and you risk being sentenced as bad/ guilty and deserving punishment. Once convicted, punishment the greatest threat of punishment can be a form of time out/banishment hat can be temporary or permanent. Rules perceived as confusing or unfair can feel stifling. Ones egos can also can feel anger when 1s see others disobeying or dodging the rules and not getting "caught". Ones feel a strong pull to correct others If their ego takes charge charge, punishment is always included. once a person is judged/sentenced asjudging as person shameful as "bad" in ..Since One's judge feeling angry as wrong and culpable. One's self judgements can be equally harsh on themselves unless they term their angry feeling as a form of righteous and acceptable resentment.. Making ego judgements without Humility UE#10 is termed as hubris. This is the difficult challenge for everyone, but especially difficult for ones. Making comparisons is often a subtle form of judgement and rarely recognized as such. permeates much of our thinking The hubris of rgo deems its judgements as perfectly fair and accurate In the Upper Octave, The Higher Laws reflecting Truth and Perfection UO#13 maintains the harmony of all Creation without needing ego's personal judgements.. Humility UE#10 is the gift of the Upper Octve to pull us out of the trap of prideful judgements.. Gentle kindness UO#14 can also deliver corrective judgements without any hint of punitive judgements of shameful guilt.
5s often grow up in an emotionally intrusive and intrusive environments where having a private refuge for escape is crucial. Often quite introverted, 5s prefer their private spaces to analyze what they are observeg and learning. This enables them to strategize and prepare on on how they wiill nivigate the often confusing, or threatening the outer social world when they have to leave their private refuge of security. They are highly motivated (Likes ...) to become experts in their chosen fields of interest. Their ego perceives their superior expertise as validation of their judgements I.e. its Pride (LO #8)from which to judge others' behaviors and ideas. More comfortable in their heads and thinking things through, they prefer being the aloof Observer in the corner rather than joining the dynamic emotional atmosphere of social gatherings. Life can be "safe to watch but scary to participate in."This "Head/Mind" intelligence over "Heart/Emotional" intelligence can make also intimate relationshipsq uite challenging.Since doubts are unavoidable in ongoing thinking and analyses, 5s is often plagued by uncerainty (LO Fear #5) at a deeper levels. As 5s draw upon the Upper Octave, particularly Humility UO #10 they can reach solid levels of Knowledge and Certainty in UO#13.
Type 6's ego personality, perceives the outside world as threatening and unpredictabile,. 6s habitually scan their environment for possible threats and danger. Like "prey" animals... (their Enneagram totem animal is the rabbit or deer. (Side note... totem animals of each Type will not covered in these brief summaries) 6s make vigilant lookouts watching for "predators". 6s therefore can be prone to distrustiing other's behaviors and underlying motives. To make matters worse remember they are Thinking /Mind centeredness, (rather than Gut/Instinctual of the 8 9 and 1)or Heart/Emotion centeredness of the 2 3 and 4 types) The ego mind can can create endless doubts and uncertainties about their own beliefs and judgements. This explains why Type 6 is seen in the Enneagram as the type most plagued by Fear (LO #5 ). Not surprisingly 6s are drawn to strong leaders for protection. direction. and relief from their incessantly doubting egos, Membersip in and loyalty to a group, (be it a religion, cult, national culture etc) adds another layer of safety for 6s. They usually avoid any deviance from group norms lest they face the risk of being exclusded. As 6s come to see how fear in any form is imprisoning and separates them Love, an increasing pull toward Unconditional Faith LO#9 and the Fearlessness that comes with this commitment..
7s fearful ego is preoccupied with having multiple escape plans should they become trapped in a of place of emotional distressin.in a world perceived as threatening. Emotional distress can take many formson the Lower Octave. LE#3 Boredom can descend into Apathy & Depression if a 7 does not escape to something new Likes (LE#6) eventually grow stale and become Boring if they do not find a newer fresher batch of Likes. Dislikes ,of course, are to be avoided whenever possible. Nostalgia for the past, or prolonged feelings of grief and loss is not a place to dwell for 7s.Staying in the status quo, a place of comfort & safety for some Egram TYPES, can make 7s anxious.. For 7s not being tethered too long to aynthing (relationship to anything (a job, a location, an exclusive monogamous relationshipetc.) looks like freedom. If the outer forms of escape via physical relocation is less available, inner escape (Being a Thinking?Mind Type) through books and fantasy & entertainment awaits. What at first looks like the envious nomadic lifestyle of ever new adventures, underneath can be an insecure ego trying to stay one step ahead of emotional distress. Being steadfast in understanding practicing the true freedom for the Upper Octave Emotions can become a new status quo for 7s.
Level 8 ego pride:
++ I am important because I sacrifice and give to my friends and family.
++I am worthwhile because I am needed.
Level 6 desire (Likes=attractor fields of energy)
Cravings and attachments in Buddhist terms.
Examples of Type 2 desires:
++ an approving audience/number of likes on social media
++being seen as a special friend,...
++being appreciated by one's partner for all that they give them in their relationship. "See all the likes I have on social media. See my importance in my circles of friends, family and co workers."... "See everything that I have done for you in this relationship"
Dislikes and avoidances= resistance energy fields
Example:
++asking for... or asserting one's own needs instead of the other person's wishes
Level 7 anger/resentment
Arises from the "conditional" strings attached to what is given.
Examples of a Type 2 thinking pattern.
++"You owe me" to give back in equal measure. Or I will see this situation as unfair. And if treated unfairly I am a victim and be entitled to be angry, resentful or withholding to punish you as the bad guy i.e. perpetrator in the relationship.
Level 1 shame
Examples ego type thinking at this Level:
++I am not that lovable attractive or worthwhile a person.
++ I don't have the right to ask for what I want or to feel angry if I am not appreciated or seen for who I am.
Higher Mind Upper Octave thinking
Level 14.Kindness Love Compassion
++In my Heart I know the Truth that
who I really am is a kind person
Level 15 Joy and Gratitude
++ I am fortunate to be in a of abundance position to have something to share
++ I really find joy in volunteering
++ Sharing is a win/win situation for both of us
++ I don't want to refuse this gift and the joy of giving being expressed by this person
Level 16 Peace
++This is the wonderful form of Selfishness as Unconditional Giving
Threes came to realize as children , that achievement in areas deemed important in their environment, results in their receiving recognition and approval. They are particularly drawn toward efficiency by learning the best skills to employ their chosen field of effort... These skills combined with ambition and a competitive drive to excel propels 3s to ever higher levels of achievement.
3s can be very adept at reading people and their personality patterns... Their ego style can easily become chameleon like... able to quickly change and adapt. to the immediate emotional and cultural landscape They also have the flexibility to align with the interests and perspectives of diverse groups, as they navigate their work, social, and personal relationships.
Mistakes in their efforts toward success are often not so much seen as opportunities to learn from but more as dangerous events to quickly fix lest they threaten the 3's reputation. The danger of failure in their chosen field (as judged by by others or by themselves) is their core fear. LE#5. Failure is the ever present threat, lurking in the shadows ,ready to destroy their ego's foundation of self worth.
To counter such threats, 3s are drawn to precise and well engineered training programs, theoretical models models, formulas promising success. Although being the center of the Self Identity/Heart triad, 3s Achilles heel is being out of touch with their inner feelings given their over focus on doing and achieving. This imbalance leaves 3s vulnerable to the imposter syndrome . No matter how high their outward status and appearances, deep down they cannot escape a nagging existential angst.
When 3s stay focused on this Triad's central question Who am I really? they move toward and awaken to their True Identity and the Universal Emotions of the Higher Octave
